Location: Cambridge, MA, United States
Job # 10585864
Date Posted: 03-10-2018

Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, close to its roots at the MIT Media Lab, Luminoso is an AI-based natural language understanding software company that allows clients to rapidly discover value in their unstructured text data.  We apply cutting-edge research in natural language processing and machine learning to help companies quickly uncover value in their data. Clients can rapidly learn what’s driving their KPIs, optimize their client interactions, detect critical trends, and uncover topics that their customers care about.  Luminoso sits at the intersection between cutting-edge science and newly emerging business needs.
Initial product focus:  Compass, our streaming document classification tool, used to understand, categorize, and track streaming data in real time
Luminoso is seeking an experienced engineer to join the team that develops our Compass product.  It’s a small team, but one where your work can have a big impact! We’re exploring some exciting new directions for the product, so you’ll be collaborating heavily with product management and sales as we experiment with potential new features. There’s a lot of work to be done around scalability and performance improvements, new classification methods, and refinements to our REST API.  This is primarily a server-side Python development position, but willingness to help out with some front-end work as needed is a big plus.
  • Write clean, well-tested Python code for our back-end codebase
  • Less frequently, make small Javascript updates to our front-end codebase
  • Incrementally improve the architecture of the Compass application through refactoring and design discussions with the team
  • Work with business stakeholders to identify and refine new features
  • Help everyone on the team improve continuously through code review, retrospectives, pair programming, and mentoring
  • Collaborate with the Operations team and with other developers to tackle the performance challenges of streaming document classification at scale
  • You get excited about going into gnarly old code to make it easier to work with
  • You enjoy collaborating, communicating and sharing your knowledge with others
  • Any experience with test driven development, extreme programming (XP), refactoring, pair or mob programming will really set you apart!
We don’t expect you to have experience with all of these, but you should be ready to start work in an environment where they’re actively in use. Django experience in particular is a big plus!
  • Python 3
  • Django
  • Django REST Framework
  • CoffeeScript
  • Celery
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • Git
  • Jenkins
  • Docker
  • Linux
